Mixed Media, 2010
‘Higher Ground‘ looks at the changes occurring in the Lower East Side in New York City through the lens of the First Roumanian American Congregation, a synagogue that partially collapsed in 2006 and has since been completely razed.
The fall of the building provoked several exposures: that of media interest in a historical building that had been previously overlooked and that of the consecrated, interior space becoming open to its mundane surroundings. Taking these incidents of exposure as inspiration, the installation examines the ever-changing interrelationships between attention, neglect, the sacred and the profane.
The work was realized for the group exhibition ‘Lush Life / Chapter 4: Let It Die‘ at Lehmann Maupin Gallery, New York
